Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Post-Impressionist painter. He was a Dutch artist whose work had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. His output includes portraits, self portraits, landscapes and still lifes of cypresses, wheat fields and sunflowers. He drew as a child but did not paint until his late twenties; he completed many of his best-known works during the last two years of his life. In just over a decade, he produced more than 2,100 artworks, including 860 oil paintings and more than 1,300 watercolors, drawings, sketches and prints.
In Year 4 children have the opportunity to write in many different formats, have guided reading daily, visit the school library to get a book to take home as well as consolidating and progressing their learning in maths through number, shape, data handling and problem solving.
Reading books and reading diaries go home every afternoon and are brought to school every morning. We encourage the children to read every night, and write in their reading diary each time they do so. To support maths you could help them practice their mental maths and times tables (including for division facts).
PE will take place on Wednesdays. Children need a plain white t-shirt and blue jogging bottoms or shorts to change into, as well as suitable footwear (plimsolls or trainers).
Swimming for Year 4 will take place on a Friday. All children must wear a swimming hat. Jewellery should not be worn, however small studded earrings are acceptable.
Homework is given out once a week on a Friday and will be due in the following Thursday. If children are finding it difficult, discuss homework club with the teacher.
Year 4 will perform an assembly about the things they have been learning on the 5th February 2016. Parents are welcome to attend these.

Autumn Term 1 – London Calling
This half term our theme is World War 1 London. We will be learning about the war and how it affected the local area. Children will be looking at how London has changed since WW1. The English focus will be the story of Guy Fawkes and learning about why he is celebrated. Children will have the opportunity to expand their storytelling, poetry and drama skills as they learn the story. Whilst learning the story, children will work to produce a London background. This will eventually be used alongside the Science unit of Electricity where children will build houses that light up! Their learning outside school will take place with a visit to Westminster Abbey. After exploring the Abbey and collecting research the children will create their own leaflets with interesting facts.
Spring Term 1 – Viking Invasion
Year 4 have been learning about the Vikings and how they contributed to British history. We planned, designed and made our own Viking longships. We also looked at the lifestyles of Vikings, in particular their trading and how they invaded other countries. We also looked at the positive aspect of Vikings such as the skills of craftsmen, sewing, jewellery making and farming. Their knowledge on the Vikings was increased through the workshop we had in the Greenwich Maritime Museum. In science, we looked at Electricity. The children investigated with circuits and carried out experiments on what would the effect be if the numbers of bulbs or batteries were added to a circuit. In reading, the children are broadening the knowledge of a range of authors and this half term we focused on books by Anne Fine.
