This term, Year 5 have had a fantastic workshop with Stephen Guy where we got to create and design our very own moving mechanism box.

Stephen brought several hand-controlled automata for the classes to explore first; some made sounds, some flapped wings, and some created beautiful intricate movements.

After that, we began to assemble our mechanisms – piece by piece – until we had a box containing parts which could move when a handle was turned. We learned all about cams, cam shafts and cam followers – these were all essential components to make our automaton work.

Then, we set out to decorate and customise our creations with beads, eyes, coloured paper, hot glue and so much more! It was so much fun to be so creative and make an original working piece of art.
