Did you know that everyone in Britain was given a gas mask?

Did you know that by the end of World War 2, around 3.5 million people, mainly children, experienced evacuation?
Children had labels attached to them – as if they were parcels. They didn’t know where they were going or who they were going to be with. Once the children arrived in the countryside, they were taken to a village hall where they met the billeting officer. After this stage, the host families haggled over the most presentable children and the children who were sick or appeared messy, were left until last.
